Three suggested itineraries from JR Nakatsugawa Station, all returning via JR Nagiso Station. Choose the course that suits your schedule and pace.

Total time may vary depending on bus and train waiting times. Distances between post towns are measured from honjin to honjin. The actual walking distance from the end of Magome-juku to the entrance of Tsumago-juku is about 8 km.

Leave your bags at Mon before you go. Head to Magome by bus from Nakatsugawa Station (4 min walk), hike through to Tsumago, then take the bus to JR Nagiso Station and train back to Nakatsugawa. Pick up your luggage when you return — no heavy pack required.

The Route

Magome-juku (馬籠宿)
Start · Cobblestone streets lined with Edo-period shops. Pick up snacks before the trail.

Magome-toge Pass (馬籠峠)
~2.2 km from Magome · 801m elevation · The highest point. After here it’s all downhill to Tsumago.

Tateba-jaya Tea House (立場茶屋)
Halfway point · Rest stop in a traditional farmhouse. Try the gohei-mochi!

Tsumago-juku (妻籠宿)
End · ~8 km from Magome · One of Japan’s best preserved post towns. Bus to JR Nagiso Station from here.

Cherry blossoms and fresh greenery. Mild temperatures.

Summer · Jun–Aug

Forest shade keeps it cool. Start early to beat the heat.

Autumn · Sep–Nov

Peak foliage in October. The most dramatic scenery.

Winter · Dec–Mar

Snow possible. Check trail conditions before going.

Shoes

Trail sneakers or light hiking shoes are fine.

Water & food

Stock up in Magome before the trail.

Bear bells

Ring the bells mounted on posts along the route.

Completion stamp

Get a certificate stamped at both tourist offices.

Luggage

Leave bags at Mon and walk light.

Direction

Magome → Tsumago is recommended. More downhill this way.

From Tsumago · Bus to JR Nagiso Station (~10 min) → Train to Nakatsugawa (~20 min)
